Hexagram #33 - The Hermit

33 – The HermitWithdrawal – Mountain under the Sky

We have been correct in our pushing, but we must understand that every action will also have a reaction. Thus said, we shall perform a calculated and joyous withdrawal from the said circumstances. In this way, we may cultivate what we have gained like a gardener would a newly acquired sapling. The hermit withdraws to the mountain in a joyous state, being excited about the wisdom gained and the time he will have to allow it to blossom within his being. Thus said, we are advised to leave other people to their own devices and Withdraw!

1stThe Hermit is Stuck – He thought to dig himself a hole to withdraw, but now he is stuck in the hole! The wise man yields, but not in extreme. Remember, after the yielding is finished, we still will have to return.

2ndThe Hermits Knot – Tying and binding our affairs with a steadfast will presages assured success. The wise man ties up all loose affairs and binds the rest with iron before he withdraws. No quarter should be given.

3rdThe Fatigued Hermit – He yields not out of joy, but rather overwhelming fatigue. There is no success in such a thing. Instead of withdrawing, the wise man will focus on non-stressful associates such as servants and lovers.

4thThe Calculating Hermit – The wise man now withdraws for good reason as those of mean temperament engage in self-destructive activities. He observes this from the shadows and returns to claim the territory after the others have exhausted their will from fighting each other.

5thThe Honorable Hermit – Every action he takes is without fault and in consideration for all people. Following such an honorable path now dictates a withdrawal.

6thThe Hermit Retires – Everything is golden and finished. The wise man cashes in his chips, says his goodbyes and ventures forth to construct his dream home upon the mountain. There should be no doubt in this, for all omens are favorable.

All Six – The Hermit Returns – Being full of everything, the wise man reenters the marketplace and distributes his goods and power freely to those who may ask. Now is the joyous time of giving and drawing people inwards.
