Hexagram #20 – The Tower

20 – The TowerObservation – Wind across the Earth

The tower is a place for contemplation, preparation and observation. The wise man ascends the steps to distance himself from other people and gain perspective on the cycles of joy and pain in himself, the populace and the seasons. Though it sometimes be necessary to ascend the tower, keep in mind that standing on the tower is only a preparation for actual action. It can be considered the first step along a seven-step road. The sacrifice of blood, sweat and tears must still be performed.

1stThe Toy Tower – It is acceptable for a child to play at being an adult, but a man with responsibilities pretending to be child? What is this? Priorities need to be realigned and responsibility needs to be taken.

2ndThe Spy Tower – Though it may seem slightly embarrassing, the wise man gains advantage at this time by setting spies to keep secret watch at the door cracks and listen for whispers in the wind. The information gained by such may prove to be invaluable.

3rdThe Strategy Tower – Ascending the steps, the wise man takes personal time to find silence. From this silence, he will gain perspective of his situation and make the confident decision whether to advance or to retreat.

4thInspecting the Tower – Before committing to action, the wise man may wish to wander from realm to realm, inspecting and carefully weighing the pros and cons of each option before coming to a final decision.

5thThe Watch Tower – Through concern for their well-being, the wise man climbs the tower to keep watch upon the people that surround him. He does this because he may be able to perceive things that others are not.

6thThe Contemplation Tower – There is a time for everything and now is the time to separate ourselves from the lives of other people and take time to understand and rectify our own troubles.

All Six – Descending the Tower – The time for observation and contemplation is now finished as we take council from a wise one and make plans to direct our intentions towards the south and the west.
