The companions approach the base of the mountain as the path winding upwards becomes visible. We should move forward with a slow, steady confidence, but be aware that further up the mountain, the path fails and we will be forced to trail blaze. That is to say, the first leg will be easy, but further along in the future, we can expect significant difficulties.
1st – A Well Worn Path – The road we chose is popular and true, being tested and worn by countless generations. Now is not the time to rebel, but rather move forward, following the advice of those who have come before.
2nd – A Straggler on the Path – The companions set forth on the tried path, while one breaks from the group to find an alternative route. He will surly become lost in the forest; the leader should rebuke him and then let the affair be forgotten, for there be greater struggles ahead.
3rd – A Useless Path – The bags are packed and the companions are ready to set forth. Alas, the leader receives a message by carrier pigeon that it would not be advantageous to move forward at this time. Best to let it pass and wait for another opportunity.
4th – The Shining Path – The road is well marked, the sky is blue and the mountain beckons us forward. All the omens are in accord, move forward with confidence while taking care to avoid unnecessary mistakes.
5th – The Middle Path – The wise man studies the omens and carefully contemplates before moving forward. He balances left against right, gain against loss, before taking the intelligent approach of the middle path.
6th – The Secret Path – Waking before dawn, the wise man scurries into the forest alone and discovers a secret path up the mountain; he tells no one. It would be best now to not discuss our will or goals with others, but rather silently move forward and wait for them at the top of the mountain.
All Six – Erasing the Path – We have successfully reached our goal and have stored enough provisions to weather with our companions. Better now to cover our tracks and erase the path, for if more come then all shall go hungry.
