what could have caused this to happen to the heavy steel cutlery in the restaurant I was in?

I was in a restaurant a couple of years ago, and when I took the knife fork came with it! My cutlery had become strong magnet. It took three or four pounds of pull to separate them. If I put the pieces within five or six inches apart, they would jump up and reconnect. As far as I know, mine was the only cutlery magnetized. What do you think could have caused this?
