Looking back in history of Thailand, we see clearly the close relationship between Buddhism and the Thai nation. The history of the Thai people is also the history of Buddhism. Realization of these facts, the rulers in Thailand have taken responsibility for the protection and promotion of Buddhism.

The rulers of Thailand have encouraged and supported the construction and maintenance of Buddhist monasteries, the monks by providing material needs and facilities for the performance of religious services, by patronizing their educational activities, like the councils to review the Buddhist Tripitaka and that the Scriptures translated into Thai, and reforming Sangha and appointed Supreme Patriarch able to govern the Order. Since BE 2446 (1903 CE), the State has also enacted laws that form the constitution under which the Sangha framework.

The Department of Religious Affairs was established in the Ministry of Education to establish close cooperation between the Order and the Government and to provide a channel through which the Sangha can communicate with government authorities and through, which the state can promote the welfare of the Sangha.

Four Buddhist holy days are recognized by the government as nationalholidays, namely, the Magha Puja Day, Visakha Puja Day, the Day Puja and Asalha Khao Pansa Day Almost all ceremonies of state and public administration are blessed by the participation and part of senior members of the Order. People also invite the monks to sing Sutra and the formulas of protection for their blessing and protection in all domestic rites such as housewarmings, birthday parties and weddings, and in particular to conduct funeral rites and memorial services for the benefit of the deceased.
