The Sari
$19.53 The history of the sari links an ancient north Indian terra-cotta of a woman wearing this simple garment to the saris created by twentieth-century Paris designers. The essential simplicity of the sari -- an untailored length of cloth measuring between four and nine meters long by approximately one meter wide -- is set against a wonderful variety of fabrics, colors, patterns, and draping styles. There are richly diverse regional traditions of color, pattern, and weave, analyzed comprehensively here through a six-fold division of the Indian subcontinent: the West; the East; the North-East and the Himalayas; the Eastern Deccan; the South; and the Western Deccan. Each section is accompanied by a dazzling display of sari types in color, all specially photographed. The result of many years' research, the book contains the most detailed analysis of sari design ever undertaken, with a comprehensive guide to the symbols, patterns, and motifs used, together with their origins and information about how they have evolved. Many rare and unusual saris are featured, along with photographs of the designs and diagrams of over forty sari types. A substantial reference section includes translations of more than four hundred Indian words and concepts, a glossary of textile terms, information on museum collections, a full bibliography, a detailed chronology, and a table of sari measurements. |

My Dadima Wears a Sari
$10.25 Every day, Rupas grandmother wears a beautiful Indian sari. Each is brightly colored and very beautiful. Dont you ever want to wear a gray skirt and red blouse with round buttons like Mommy or a green dress like me? Rupa asks. But Dadima prefers to wear her traditional saris. She shares with her granddaughter all the wonderful things that saris can dofrom becoming an umbrella in a rainstorm to providing a deep pouch to carry seashells. Soon Rupas own imagination is sparked as she envisions saris protecting her in the scary Gir Jungle, bandaging up an injured knee, and holding a special secret for her and Dadima to share. Kashmira Sheth provides young readers with a unique view of Indian culture and tradition through this affectionate, sensitive portrait of a grandmother and her American granddaughter. Hindu words defined and sprinkled throughout the text further add to the authenticity of the story. Yoshiko Jaeggis sweeping, colorful, and fanciful watercolor illustrations capture the extraordinary bond of love that unites families across generations despite cultural differences. A note from the author and instructions for wrapping a sari are included. |

Cartwheels in a Sari (Hardcover)
$19.29 Jayanti Tamm relates the remarkable story of her life as a reluctant member of a cult led by the eccentric guru Sri Chinmoy, a spiritual leader who was publicly praised by prominent figures such as Pope John Paul II, Nelson Mandela, and Princess Diana. Tamm`s parents met at a gathering at Chinmoy`s apartment, and he ordered them to get married but to abstain from sex. The swelling of her mother`s belly revealed their disobedience, but Chinmoy quickly reversed his stance and declared that their child was to be "The Chosen One." Thus, Jayanti found herself inexplicably bound to the bizarre sect before she was even born. Her childhood is filled with eerie episodes of interaction with Chinmoy, including caring for the menagerie of animals he kept in his basement zoo and observing his awkward advances on other young girls. As Tamm enters adolescence, she begins to find the repressive rules of the group increasingly ridiculous, particularly their disdain for dating and sex. Her compelling memoir poignantly documents her accumulating doubts about the cult, which were nearly offset by the sense of loyalty that had been systematically programmed into her fertile young mind. |
