Antique Cup

The International Art and Antiques Fair opened last week at the Olympia Exhibition Hall, Kensington, west London and continues until 15 June. I attended, as I do every year, excited, hoping to find some small treasure. My interest is Chinese art and antiques, which I bought and sold, and collected for more than thirty years. I try to visit most of the Art and Antiques fairs in the United Kingdom and some in Europe and the United States each year.
From a Chinese artistically Olympia was a disappointment for me. Although I saw a few interesting pieces, items that I wanted to buy were too expensive or restored. I resigned to leave empty-handed. Not only empty-handed, disappointed, because it was not really excited by something I saw and I had walked miles. Sold drove for a stand of coffee.
Can not find a place in the coffee shop, I sat on a bench in front of a long stand selling silver. Even if I happen to buy silver China to sell, I have never been interested in collecting silver, always seen as too bright and that require too much attention to keep it that way. I rarely watch silver stand dealers, but as I sipped my coffee I looked at the objects of this dealer was selling and quickly realized that many of them were much more than just a silver. Gold, silver, glasses, mugs and large covered cups that looked like pineapples mingled with religious objects: a golden monstrance, a rock crystal cross and reliquaries different. None of these things were normal and were all eighteenth century or even earlier.
The man who sells those items referred to many pieces of the cabinets, cheerfully, providing information in excellent English with an accent I did not recognize. I looked at the name above the surface: Peter Szuhay - B59.
Someone asked the price of a Rhinoceros horn cup with a beautiful gold, silver feet. I know nothing about Rhino Horn European works of art, so when the potential buyer left and I finished my coffee, I asked Mr Szuhay if he wanted to show me.
We chatted about the cup, now standing between us on top of a glass showcase full of jewels and discover that Mr. Szuhay is Hungarian, has lived in London for over thirty years and has a permanent stand in Grays Antique Market Davies Street in London's West End, near Bond Street station underground. He is an expert on Continental silver and works of art. He showed me various beautiful pieces early silver, mentioning the famous city of Augusta and Nuremberg, of which, even a Chinese art dealer has heard. He also has an interest in silver and then showed me some 19th century Russian silver silver fish and a magnificent 20th Century-server by the Scandinavian master silversmith, Georg Jensen.
I noticed that what had initially dismissed as jewels, on display, under the cup, was in reality a series of beautifully carved stone cameos and carvings. I'm used to seeing shells carved into portraits, mounted in brooches, usually from Italy and dating from the mid-nineteenth century until recently, but these pieces are something quite different and very exciting.
By now we were on first name terms and Peter showed me a selection of these carved stones, dating from the late nineteenth century in Rome in the third century after Christ. Exquisite, small works of art, signed by Some sixteenth-century master carvers. We were interrupted and while Peter sold a Chinese box of silver, which I had not even noticed was there and walked to the other side of the stand, where he had a second jewelry showcase.
Here was the view, what appeared to be a group of seal rings much more ordinary gold. But when he returned to speak to me again, Peter put me straight away. They were actually English Medieval rings of gold and silver. Some were other seal rings were rings corporation or iconography rings, worn by pilgrims and etched with icons of Saint Christopher etc. There were Posy rings sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: most gold bands hub sentiments engraved around the inside of the ring, in Olde English. This was an area of collecting I had never considered. I never had much interest in jewelry for ornamental jewelry but Peter was more than that - it was sculpture, graphic design and art and everything had a story and a story attached. These small masterpieces were a revelation to me.
I have not bought anything from Peter Szuhay in Olympia, although he did make my day and gave me something to write. I However, he promised to visit his shop in Grays Antique Market and I, and I'm sure I'll buy something from him soon. Peter also offers a selection of his stock at: href = "http://peterszuhay.co.uk."> http://peterszuhay.co.uk.
